Project Title Me Explainer Video
Tools used in Development

MS Word, PowToons, Audacity

Time in Development About 8 hours
Client Johns Hopkins University

Executive Summary

This About me explainer video was the first project I completed at JHU. I used PowToons for the entire production including music and voiceover. This project required that I use a presentation tool other than PowerPoint to introduce myself in under four minutes.  I like to make a splash, and thought an animated video would be quite exciting.  I had not used PowToons before this activity. After considering the assets offered by PowToons, I wrote the script in Word and used PowerPoint to storyboard the scenes.

Overall, the project was well received by my audience.  Their responses included some very specific information which confirmed I had engaged my audience.  I enjoyed the challenge of learning to use a new tool to create new products.

Project Title Job Aid: Subject Matter Expert: ADDIE
Tools used in Development Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Time in Development About 3 Hours

In this project, I created a Job Aid for a Cyber Security SME to help prepare them for their role in the design of a Threat Detection Course. The Job Aid had to be visually appealing and exceptionally helpful to ensure the learner get their job done most efficiently. As a Novice Graphics Designer, I occasionally find myself overdoing the stylings, this project was created with a focus on function over form. I chose to make this Job Aid for an SME since, as a designer I use many different frameworks for designing instruction, my methods rely on the processes that make up ADDIE. I decided to create a path of the instructional design process as often times it can be grueling; A path visual allows the learner to follow the process independently and know how far we are along in the process at any given time.

I envision the ID process much like a construction. Even if the SME had no prior experience working with an Instructional Designer, they would at least be fundamentally familiar with or experienced road construction. Bringing these two ideas together, I decided to create an infographic centered around construction. I am currently using this document to work with my SMEs and have found the they are more prepared for our interactions which ultimately decreases our development time.

Legal Issue Presentation: FERPA Student Privacy Laws

Project Title Legal Issue Presentation: FERPA Student Privacy Laws
Tools used in Development PowToons, Audacity
Time in Development About 6 Hours
Client Johns Hopkins University

I created this Explainer Video to help Educators chose the safest technology applications for their Learner’s to use.  In this project, I took a second shot at PowToons. This assignment tasked us develop and deliver a presentation to inform specific stakeholder on legal matters of Privacy, Internet Safety, Copyright, or Internet regulation.

I wrote the script in Word, and decided to feature animated text only to reach different kinds of learners. In this manner, Learners are able to consume the content in multiple modes; both audio and visual.

Impact Instruction-Self Learning

Project Title Impact Instruction

This project is an impact instructional piece.  This piece had to include an image that portrayed a strong message, and elicit forethought with the learners.  When used in action, an Impact Piece is a great conversation starter for Flipped or Instructor Led Lessons.  The learners get to interact with the content via a Directed Thought Path curated by the Instructor.  When creating this impact piece attention had to be given to the comfort of my learners without sacrificing the intent of the exercise.  The image I chose for this project, is intended to pique the interest of the learners and not overwhelm them. After completing this digital path, the learners would be ready for content discussions, role-play, or anchoring their best argument for a debate.

This Serious Learning Games was designed for secondary learners.  To ensure that both learning and engagement occurred in the players of our game, we had to think like both a Video Game Designer, and an Educator.  We had to conceive this gameplay idea and develop it to mockup for production.  This project includes: a Design Document, outlining the game’s learning goals, basic elements, rules, Learning Mechanics-Game Mechanics Dynamics, playability, Game assessment protocol, and a visual Mood Board to lead the Programmers to developing the game with the look and feel we wanted our game to have.  Additionally, we needed to produce images of the of several phases of gameplay.  I designed the visual mockups in Adobe Photoshop, and the Game Flow Graphic with the draw.io extension. This collaborative project multiplied our collective strengths.  As a group, this was our second major production, but our first digital product, and it proved to be a fantastic vision that layered levels of engagement and learning thought the gaming experience.
